Hello hello!
It's another glorious night of second shift awesomeness, and as you know I love chain mail. This particular one made me smile discussing the contradictions between church and state in the US, but then there was this:
Bumper sticker of the year:
"If you can read this, thank a teacher -and, since it's in English, thank a soldier !!"
Well you already know I don't like parking lots, so I don't care for car bumpers either. But the message is understood, be grateful for other people educating and protecting you..or oppressing others. Our soldiers should protect us yes, but I don't like the impression given here that our official language is English as US inhabitants. Yes I know we used to be British, we all speak our own versions of English, write in it, even added to the madness.
But since early times we have been known as a melting pot. Perhaps an exclusionary pot at times but we don't say that. What I found to be more offensive is the concept that without soldiers 'protecting' our freedom in the middle east as the times go now we would not be able to hold onto whatever our native language is. This is a common deterrent to an aggression probably going back to the days of World War the Second, where the aggressive empires of the Axis threatened to over throw the United States of America in all it's 40's glory, therefore losing our culture and having to adopt Japanese, German, Italian, etc. as the victors split the spoils.
Our freedoms (including language and free speech) are by far more than ever under more constraint and oppression than any other nation has ever intended to be plausible. We alone tap our communications, delay physical and electronic messages for inquiry, flag and blacklist our own citizens simply on the probability there may be connection between us and 'terrorists' via our religious preference. Which is also known as profiling.
Before we speak, before we act, we must think. Stay sharp readers.
